I am an internationally exhibiting visual artist currently undertaking transdisciplinary research with craftswomen in southeast Madagascar. My creative practice has always revolved around storytelling, histories of craft and craftspeople, and ideas of measurement. I make conceptual pieces that draw on bookbinding and embroidery techniques, with an emphasis on archival research, craft skills and a playful approach to materials.
My current doctoral research at the University of Bath, UK, draws on this background of making as well as several years’ experience working with craftswomen in Madagascar. I am interested in transitions of individuals’ craft methodologies and the potential to use craft making in different ways to facilitate conversation. I am using a transdisciplinary methodology to explore the ways that craft can be used as a research method in this context.
